Summary of Saint Patrick’s Day

Readers,

As a tribute to our Pats, here is a summary.

Most of my friends decided that they cannot possibly party on Thursdays, so my group was smaller than imagined.  Also Steph had a wedding to attend (not as awesome as it sounds), so I missed her terribly.  But I still had a decent sized group and a good time, so I was happy.

Bars visited:  Three and one house party

Shots taken:  Four

Drinks had:  Six

Beads acquired:  One Pats style bead necklace

Pink cowboy hats worn:  Zero

Irish people kissed:  Zero
Green beers drank:  One

I don’t know what we’re talking about Thursday yet.  See you soon.

Bar Review: Bar Louie

Readers,

I recently celebrated Larissa’s birthday with her at a bar of her choosing.  Which, if you remember me discussing her bar choices on my regular blog, you know how this all goes…

Bar Louie

Location: Denver, Westminster, South-Metro Denver (And, for you out of Colorado Woo Girl fans, there are also locations in Arkansas, California, DC, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.)

Hours:  11:00 to 02:00 Sunday through Saturday.

Local crowd:  Extremely varied in age.  No real definite local crowd.

Is this the first trip?:  Yes.

What’s awesome?:

  • Large, open floor plan
  • Delicious food
  • Tasty drinks
  • Nice waitstaff
  • Laid back atmosphere
  • Reasonably priced food
  • Lots of seating

What’s not so awesome?:

  • Long wait times
  • Overpriced drinks

Who should you go with? (for maximum fun):  Since it’s so laid back, I don’t know if there is any stipulation on who you should go with, really.

Local brews on tap?:  If I remember correctly, there were very few.  Seth asked and had to go through a few local brews (and well-known brands too) before he got one they had.

What should you drink?:  Well, the blue drink was delicious, but pricey.

What should you eat?:  I had a small plate of Hummus, Tabbouleh & Tzatziki with warm pita bread and cucumbers and it was fantastic!  So, I recommend that.  The nachos that everyone else ate were good too.

Chance of injury:  Pretty slim, yay.

Drinks:

The wait time for a drink can be long and they are pretty pricey.  They were good, but maybe not that good.

Food:

Fantastic and well priced.  The wait time is a bit long though.

Dancing:  There is only dancing at Bar Louie if you decide to start dancing.  Dance on, woo girls.

Fun:

This was pretty fun, but I kind of feel like shrugging my shoulders about it…  So I give it an eh.  It’s not the first bar I would think of if I happened to be in the area.

Patrons:

This bar can be crowded, but since there is lots of seating, you don’t really interact with the other patrons much since everyone goes in large groups.

Facility:

Can be crowded, but there is lots of seating and it is really well laid out.  The waitstaff is nice.

Overall Score:

Bar Louie receives three pink cowboy hats.  While the food is fantastic and the facility is lovely, the wait times are long and the drinks are really overpriced, in this woo girl’s opinion.

Deidree’s personal rating:  and 1/2

So, I need a picture of half a cowboy hat again, apparently…  I will give Bar Louie an extra half cowboy hat because serendipitously, one of my old friends happened to be a waitress there and was working the night I went, so we were able to reconnect.

Summary of Mardi Gras

Readers,

As a tribute to our Mardi Gras, here is a summary.

Most of my friends were sick, so I did not get to have the Mardi Gras I envisioned (St. Patrick’s Day will make up for that).  But, I still managed to have a good time.

Bars visited:  Six

Shots taken:  Six

Drinks had:  Four

Beads acquired:  Seven

Pink cowboy hats worn:  Zero

Masks worn:  One

King Cakes Eaten:  Zero

Expect a similar summary after Pats.  On Thursday, look forward to the review of an overpriced bar.

A History of Mardi Gras

Readers,

This Woo Girl is recovering from Mardi Gras, so have a few links on the history of Mardi Gras:

Carnival:  The origins of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras in the United States:  US celebrations of Mardi Gras

New Orleans Mardi Gras:  The US’ most famous Mardi Gras celebration

King Cake:  A recipe for the traditional Mardi Gras cake.

Next week, we will discuss Mardi Gras (you know, in time for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations).  You should probably expect a similar St. Patrick’s Day discussion…  So, really, March is all about holidays, in the end.

Bar Review: The Attic

Readers,

I recently visited some friends in Boulder and I would like to tell you about one of the bars we visited.

The Attic Bar and Bistro

Location: Boulder

Hours:  I want to say they’re 11:00 to about 02:00ish?  I’ve never been there earlier than 23:30, so I really have no idea when they open.

Local crowd:  Young twenty-somethings, mostly college students.

Is this the first trip?:  Nope.

What’s awesome?:

  • The bartenders and waitstaff rock!
  • Two bars
  • The drinks are reasonably priced.
  • Fat Alberts
  • The atmosphere is very laid back.
  • A lot of seating compared to floor plan
  • Clean bathrooms!
  • Close to parking (street and garage) and taxi pick up area.
  • Close to other bars.
  • Pool

What’s not so awesome?:

  • The floor plan lends itself to quite a few narrow hallways
  • Can get really crowded, which is hard on the narrow hallways
  • Wait lines for drinks are often long.
  • Built on the top floor of a building (hence “The Attic”)
  • Seating (Though there is a lot of it, it usually fills up fairly quickly.)

Who should you go with? (for maximum fun):  Your female friends in any size group or a large group of mixed sex (unless everyone in said group is prone to fun).

Local brews on tap?:  Absolutely.

What should you drink?:  Fat Albert (lovingly called the purple drink–all you taste is the purple!)

What should you eat?:  I’m sure all the happy hour type foods are fantastic, but unfortunately, I’ve never eaten here, so I can’t tell you for sure.  If I can judge their food by their bartenders, then everything is fantastic.

Chance of injury:  You’ll notice this category was not in the restaurant section.  All I will say is walk down the stairs carefully and use the wall for support, but never use other people for support unless said person happens to be your DD.

Major Woo Girl Categories:

Drinks:

The wait time for a drink can be long, but the staff is great and you will love your drink once you have it, especially if it is a Fat Albert.

Food:  As I’ve mentioned before, I haven’t actually eaten here.  But, I will do my best to eat here soon and give you an update.

Dancing:  There is only dancing at The Attic if you decide to start dancing.  Dance on, woo girls.

Fun:

This is a different kind of fun, but as long as you are with (or can find) good people, you will have a lot of fun here while you enjoy your drinks.

Patrons:

This bar can be crowded, but gets mostly separated into your own group and other people’s groups once you have your drinks in hand.  I can’t really say I’ve ever ran into any tools here, so yay.

Facility:

Can be crowded, and seating is often limited, but there is enough for it to be viable.  The bar and waitstaff are pretty fantastic as well.  There are two bars, so it definitely makes life easier (though one is cash only, if I remember correctly).

Overall Score:

The Attic receives four pink cowboy hats because I have yet to try the food (sorry), and the bar can get crowded, but it attempts to provide enough seating for its patrons despite the odd layout.

Deidree’s personal rating:  and 1/2

I really never thought I would need a half picture of a cowboy hat, so I will get to work on that, I guess…  The Attic is pretty fantastic and I really do enjoy the purple drinks enough to give them an extra half cowboy hat for them alone.

Restaurant Review: Snooze

Readers,

I recently ate breakfast at a really awesome brunch-style restaurant while visiting my friends Hailey and Larissa.  I would like to tell you all about it!

Snooze, an AM Eatery

Location: Four locations in the “Denver Area” (Lodo, Capitol Hill area, south metro, and Fort Collins, affectionately dubbed “Ballpark”, “7Co”, “Fort Fun”, and “SoGlo” respectively)

Hours:  06:30 to 14:30 (Monday through Friday) and 07:00 to 14:30 (Saturday and Sunday)

Local crowd:  People who freakin’ love brunch

Is this the first trip?:  For Hailey and Larissa, yes.  I went to the Ballpark location a few years ago.

What’s awesome?:

  • The omelettes
  • The pancakes
  • The food, in general
  • The drinks (Yeah, you can have some beer with your breakfast)
  • The wait time for drinks (speedy, speedy, speedy)
  • The tables (Especially the round booths)
  • The decoration
  • The staff (hilarious, cheerful, friendly)
  • The ambiance

What’s not so awesome?:

  • Wait time (You’ll want to plan your arrival about an hour before you want to eat)
  • Seating (Not enough seating for demand.  These restaurants could easily be twice as large.)
  • Wait time for food (Understandably long (see above), but it still sucks when you’re hungry.)

Who should you go with? (for maximum fun):  Anyone who freakin’ loves brunch (or breakfast, or lunch, or food in general)

Local brews on tap?:  Absolutely.  The “locals” vary depending on which location you go to.  The Fort, for instance, is in high support of New Belgium and the like.  But they all have Coors, obviously (but especially Ballpark).

What about coffee?:  They have a great house blend!

What should you drink?:  Coffee, Mimosas, Morning Margaritas, or Beer.  Support Kegs and Eggs!

What should you eat?:  As stated above, I’m partial to the pancakes and omelets.  They even have a pancake flight.  If you read that and thought of a beer flight, you’re absolutely right (but with pancakes).

Drinks

Whether you want coffee, orange juice, tea, soda, local brews, or a bloody mary (or anything else I suggested above) it will be awesome and you will get it quickly.  You can even just go in and sit right at the bar.

Food

If you asked me while I was waiting, I would probably give it three pink cowboy hats because being hungry makes me irrational…  But, the food is awesome enough to make up for the wait time (mostly).

Fun

Same as above.  This place is fun, but the wait time does make you kind of sour at the beginning of the meal.

Patrons

I have no identifiable feelings about the patrons.  It’s people from all over and you don’t really interact with them, but big parties and families make the wait longer.  As long as your party is cool, you’ll have a great time (and why would you go with non-cool people?).

Facility:

The staff is always great and I feel like they must have been effectively trained for disgruntled crowd control, so props to them!  As I mentioned above, ideally the restaurants should be bigger to accommodate their patronage.

Overall Score:

Four pink cowboy hats go to Snooze for their tasty food, great drinks, and awesome staff!  Woo!

Deidree’s personal rating:

Same feelings as noted above.

Woo!

Dear Readers,

I started this blog as a way to document my current woo girl activities.  I definitely feel like I needed a separate place to document what goes on in my woo girl world.  My other blog is mostly about life.  This blog is only a small portion of life, but an awesome portion.

Since this blog started from a bucket list, I think it definitely needs its own bucket list.

Things To Do As a Woo Girl

1.  Ride a mechanical bull and not fall off in two seconds.

2.  Learn to line dance.

3.  Start a trend.

4.  Bring back curly straws.

5.  Become a bar regular.

6.  Live a woo girl life on a post-grad budget.

7.  Pretend it’s my birthday so I can wear a tiara…  Get birthday drinks.

8.  Perfect pink cowboy hat wear.

9.  From the bucket list (18):  Go gambling and win.

10.  From the bucket list (19):  Be a model.

11.  From the bucket list (20):  Meet a nice guy in a bar.

That’s about all for now, but I will probably think of more later.  In the meantime, here are some things we have to look forward to in the coming weeks:

March is a host to two Woo Girl high holidays:  Mardi Gras (next Tuesday) and Saint Patrick’s Day (Thursday in two weeks).

This woo girl will start giving bar, restaurant, and place reviews of the places and events she attends.  She will do her best to be a veritable what’s what in Colorado.

And while you’re here, hopefully you will all enjoy the stories that come with these reviews.

I’m not quite sure what else will be here yet, but it’s a start.

And lastly, if you have come here from the other blog, where there are daily updates, you may be disappointed…  This blog will probably only update a couple of times a week.  For now, look forward to seeing content on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  It may go up from there, but time will tell.
